I woke up on Sunday morning with a desperate craving for burgers, to come clean I have not had a burger this year since embracing paleo in January and this is mainly due to the bun, lose the bun and most burgers will be paleo. So I was determined to find a good burger joint to indulge in – I Googled “best burgers on the northern beaches” and MOO GOURMET BURGERS came up (Manly Store). I had heard their name thrown around in association to exceptional burgers but had yet to get to one. This was all going to change! Wrangled in DanO and we planned a 2pm lunch date!
The first thing about the Manly store I had issue with was locating it, it is a doorway between two ground floor cafes in Manly and the Moo is on levels two and three. Great once we found it. The staircase up is covered in colouring in and drawings from youngsters all on the back of old menus, discovered this when I picked one up assuming it was a menu and we had to take one to a seat. The girl behind the counter gruffly stated that they were old menus, she did it with tone and told us we would find one on our table, wonder how many times she has had to explain that :). I was starting to worry that this customer service spanking was about to taint my experience but alas that was the end of it and by the time I left I was talking to the same girl about my blissful experience and our joint love for MOOkat Moo Shakes.
I was told I MUST HAVE A MILKSHAKE in reviews I read so made a HUGE mistake and ordered a milkshake first, you have to know that the milkshakes are more like cement ice creamed thickshakes that are more of a meal than a delightful beverage. That being said, I wanted to fill a bath with it, rub it all over my skin and make love to it all. Small explanation, today was CHEAT DAY – no paleo following and eat what hell I want. And boy oh boy did I – I had the MOOkat Moo Shake – Kit Kat, peanut butter, chocolate syrup, ice-cream and whipped cream in a tall glass with a straw (cost $8.50) – first foodgasm occurred here. DanO had the STRAWBERRIES & CREAM Moo Shake – Strawberries, malt, ice-cream and whipped cream (cost $8.50). I found his tasted more traditional while maintaining the incredibly thick consistancy.
As for meals, I wanted the signature dish so asked and found out this was the BIG MOO- 100% Australian Angus Pure Natural Beef, cheddar cheese, free rang bacon, free range egg, pineapple, beetroot, tomato, mixed leaf lettuce, home-made may and tomato relish (cost $16.50). It is up there with the best burgers I have ever eaten in my life and just what my cravings needed, second and multiple foodgasms experienced here. Any burger instantly gets extra points if it has the big four extras (bacon, egg, pineapple and beetroot). It was so massive though and considering they have a DELUXE MOO- a double decker of this I have no idea how you could eat it. I got two mouthfuls out of mine and had an egg smile from ear to ear and then deconstructed and ate with cutlery, DanO explained to me my mistake was putting it down in the first place and I was being un Australian eating it with cutlery :).
Now I mentioned our first mistake was ordering the MOO SHAKES first, being so filling I struggled desperately through the burger, I left most of the bun and in the end some lettuce, cheese and tomato. Next time, a bottle of water, the burger and then the milkshake as a dessert. One chips to share, not chips and onion rings.
DanO had the incredible DUCK & BACON SPECIALTY BURGER- 100% free to roam duck patty (how is the patty free to roam?), free range bacon, tomato, mixed leaf lettuce , home made mayo and orange jam (cost $16.50). I had a mouthful of this and it was amazing!! DanO believes it was too sweet and overpowered by the orange jam – I am thinking maybe too much on the burger?
We also had a serving of chunky home styled chips on the side of my burger (cost $4.50) and beer battered onion rings on the side of DanOs (cost $4.50). We also bought some spicy piri piri mayo to go with it (cost $1.50).
It should be noted this is not a visit to Maccas, with Maccas prices, you pay for goodness. Everything is free range (up until being slaughtered for our consumption) and it is not a budget meal you are paying for. On a side note that meal lasted me from 2.30pm until 530am – I had no dinner that night, I was exhausted and so full, sustained me until breakfast the next day.
CHUNKY CHIPS $4.50
DIPPING SAUCE $1.50
TOTAL EACH FOR LUNCH: $31-
For me, well worth it to calm my craving and to get out with a friend and sit in a venue overlooking Manly beach. Photos were hard as the tables are VERY small and close to each other but everything was made up for with that food.
MOO GOURMET BURGERS has a store in Bondi, Coogee, Newtown and this one in Manly – get yourself into one stat!!
SCORE: Venue 3/5 spoons, Service 3/5 spoons, Food 5/5 spoons.
