Before my first visit to The Tiny Giant in Petersham I had only known of it from Instagram. A venue that has come instafamous for its total food porn menu. I have yet to return for their newish unicorn rainbow bagels but you will get the point from below, plus check out their instagram or website – everything is so bright and pretty.
THE TINY GIANT VENUE:
Located on the above corner in Petersham The Tiny Giant is indeed tiny in location but only in location. It is only open for all-day breakfast and lunch closing at 3pm daily. The inside and the outside is packed for most of their operating hours but expect the weekends to be extra busy. So of course we visited on a Saturday morning and sat right near the counter – it was quite the challenge to get photos.
It’s an old school corner terrace building with the most awesome roof and rustic interior design. The counter is packed with pastries with their cronuts being a MUST have treat. The old tin chairs and aged look tables add to the instaworthiness of the menu.
INSTAGRAM FOOD PORN MENU:
Rainbow bagels, unicorn toasties where the cheese is rainbow coloured and their famous Belgium waffles with Persian floss are enough to set your insta on fire with likes. But it isn’t just about making it look good. It actually tastes great as well. The Tiny Giant is a relatively healthy cafe with mueslis, bagels, pastries and acai bowls. But they do go the extra mile beyond their porn food and also do things like Prosciutto and Egg rolls instead of bacon, a much loved Smashed Avo dish and even one that I need to return for……….Baked Hotpot. How good does this sound? Slow cooked tomato sugo, mushrooms, danish feta and two free range eggs baked in an iron pan. It’s their take on a Shakshuka.
And the lunch menu – OMG. Reuben, Croque Madam, Burger, salads and have I mentioned CRAB ROLLS!!!
They use Campos beans for the coffees, cover all the beverage bases and have a fantastic food menu for the mini humans. It’s win win!
WHAT WE SMASHED:
Nutella and Oreo Cronut
White Chocolate and Pistacchio Cronut
San Fran Crab Roll – Crab meat marinated with garlic aioli, baby capers, celery & chives. Finished with heirloom tomatoes, whiskey sour pickles, paprika & spring onions
Brioche Toast – Served with strawberries, mixed berries, Canadian maple, salted caramel, mascarpone & Persian pashmak ADD ONS: a side of aged prosciutto
WHAT WE THOUGHT:
All close to flawless. The white chocolate cronut was the favourite flavour-wise for me but the Oreo and Nutella cronut will impress everyone with it’s syringe Nutella dose. The roll for the crab roll crumbled sadly and I think it was a day or two old but the filling is enough to make me submit. Crab rolls, lobster rolls, or the meats without the rolls are two of my favourite things and I will always order them if I see them. I would return just for this roll!
The brioche toast looked like something Hello Kitty would order for brunch and was so bright from the Persian Pashmak that I dropped the saturation of the photo. But with it being so incredibly bright and sweet looking it was actually a nuanced dish. It wasn’t overly sweet and the fruits blended well with the mascarpone, maple and caramel. I bloody loved this and it got my dish-of-the-day award. Next time it has to be the Belgium waffles and hotpot for me plus another crab roll and maybe a Croque Madam haha.
If you haven’t visited The Tiny Giant in Petersham then you have to correct this dining omission ASAP. I recommend a weekday breakfast or get in as the place opens on the weekends. If you need your insta boosted be sure to order some of their porn food but don’t think because it’s colourfully gimmicky that it isn’t nuanced and fracking delicious!
