We all love a bloody delicious BBQ chook, that perfect lazy home meal you can collect on the way home. Feed the family for cheap with quality luscious super tasty chicken. Fight over the oysters and state how unhealthy the chicken skin is before ramming the entire thing in your mouth and rolling your eyes back in tastebud orgasm. THE HONEST CHICKEN is less than fifteen minutes from my house and it serves up more than AMAZING chooks and is going to become a regular drop in on my way home. My local is at Belrose but the good news for Northern Beaches peeps is that their new Newport store is soon to open!
THE HONEST CHICKEN VENUE:
The Belrose location is inside the Glenrose Village Shopping Centre up near the Glenn St Theatre. The shopping centre itself has undergone some wonderful renovations in the last couple of years and is the perfect place to do all your shopping and end with a salad or a banh mi from THE HONEST CHICKEN while you grab your dinner chook for the family. The family don’t have to know you also scored a delicious banh mi.
The shop itself has counter and kitchen on one side and seating on the other. It’s a simple well laid out chicken store that stocks everything you need. We ate in on this visit and I could happily dine in on each visit but that defeats the convenience of a chicken shop, everything is designed for takeaway. It’s as fresh as it gets, from their kitchen to yours.
THEIR CHICKEN STORY:
THE HONEST CHICKEN story hails from the owners very own family kitchen table.
Like many Aussie families, they live busy, full lives, and often want convenience food that’s fast, easy and healthy. Chicken is nearly always the answer, but time and again when they’d purchased it locally, they found that it was cooked too dry, too salty, too small and “what was in that stuffing!?”
They wanted simple, tasty, good quality and satisfying hot chicken – packed with goodness. But it struck them that no one locally was really offering this ultimate comfort food on the Beaches, the way it should be.
So, the idea of The Honest Chicken was born; to do a simple thing well and to do it properly.
Their focus on quality led them to search for the best Australian chicken, and they’ve found it – on a rural farm where free range really does mean free range. With better breeding and living conditions, the chickens are happier and healthier than others.
Their commitment to the customer is to provide fresh, wholesome food that is as natural as possible and bursting with flavour, goodness and life.
The Honest Chicken is about farm-to-table, free range chicken, that’s hormone and antibiotic free, with proper stuffing. It’s about flame-grilled burgers made the old fashioned way. It’s about generous portions of healthy salads, with a big taste to match.
WHAT THEY OFFER:
Everything you expect from a chicken shop but better and more. Of course there is the epic chooks, I am salivating and wanting one for breakfast while I write this now. Meal packs, chicken, beef and pork burgers, schnitty burgers and even veggie burgers. Then there’s chicken rolls, banh mis, chicken and gravy rolls (my god it’s been ages since I had one of these), salad rolls, roast pork rolls, oodles of salads, wicked sides and kid’s meals to keep them happy – although all the food is kid friendly so just give them anything. They even make shakes!! I really shouldn’t be writing this article before work and prior to brekky!!

WHAT WE DEVOURED AND THOUGHT:
Myself and great friend Naughty Nashy, who I hadn’t seen in forever, smashed a chook, a banh mi, a chicken burger and some roast veggie. Ok – we attempted it – I took a lot of it home and lived off it for the next two dinners. It was all smashing. That chicken is truly one of the best in Sydney – soooooooooo juicy and fresh and the free range, unadulterated life of the chook really did come out in the flavour. Comparing it to a supermarket chicken is like comparing Maccas to Heston Blumenthal.
The drumsticks and wings looked insane and I am sad I didn’t try some of those but now I have something more to look forward to on my next visit. The banh mi was delicious and fresh but it was more an Aussie version of a banh mi and not Asian styled. As a chicken roll though it was scrumptious. The salads were fresh and abundant but I leaned more towards vegetables and the pumpkin and beetroot veggies were divine. I could have had that on its own for a meal,it was epic with my roast chook leftovers.
The chicken burger I had was the The Double Honest Chicken (one of their signatures). It came with two grilled chicken fillets, lettuce, tomato, extra cheese and aioli. It was a delicious chicken burger but I found the fillets quite flat – I thought the double would photograph like a tall burger – it was amazing and filling but didn’t photograph too sexy. I have two more from the chicken burgers I need to try on future visits – The Hot & Spicy Honest Schnitzel and The Chicken with the Lot. I also have to smash the Beef with the Lot to see how they make their beef. Look out Sunday fun day visits from home!!
Chicken shops are a dime a dozen, there is one in every town. THE HONEST CHICKEN is in a league of its own. Their use of pasture roaming free range chooks that are hormone and antibiotic free makes for one deliciously unique and juicy chook. Throw in all the other food they make and they will soon be responsible for some kilos of my body weight.
