Big thanks to Danny from QTix for shouting a late afternoon lunch for myself and small group of other foodstagrammers. We had a great little adventure to Saigon Bowl in Strathfield. For me it took 90mins in traffic, from home, and while the food and venue were fantastic the distance will probably not see me returning unless I end up living closer. Now – if they were to open venues closer to the CBD I would visit regularly because their Vietnamese food was A-Game stuff.
SAIGON BOWL VENUE:
The venue for Saigon Bowl is pretty standard fare. It’s on the main drag of Strathfield with a glass frontage, tables filling all the available floor space and lots of dark wood. It was quite a comfortable venue. The dark tables made for some great photo backdrops. The staff were quite efficient and while we started a very early dinner in no time at all the place was packed.
QTix is an app that helps you (as a venue) manage waitlists and queue and (for patrons) it electronically minds your spot in a queue. When I first heard about the app I thought it was crazy. But the more I eat out at popular venues the more I see the need. I stood in the rain for 90mins with my parents in a queue at Din Tai Fung – if the venue and myself had the app I could have been in a warm and dry pub across the road and received notification when I could get in. In New York there is a new craze where you basically pay people, actual humans, to mind your spot in queues. It’s crazy – the app is much cheaper for everyone involved. Love the idea and will be using QTix in the future.
SAIGON BOWL MENU:
The physical menu itself is marvellous – it’s a picture book and I LOVE a picture menu – you know what every dish will look like. If the pics are good you have endless options of delightful looking food. From memory the menu is about twenty-two pages long however so kick back with a Vietnamese iced coffee while you peruse the yummy nomnoms.
We had a massive spread:
- Deep Fried Salt and Pepper Squid and Fish
- Fried Rice
- Mixed Entree
- Combined Entree
- Sizzling Beef
- Multiple Phos
WHAT I THOUGHT:
The Vietnamese food at Saigon Bowl is marvellous – I really couldn’t fault anything besides the one food blogger at our table who took close to an hour to get his table spread flat lay with everyone’s food and then have a bitch about us taking photos of his flat lay – nearly strangled him to death. Eating the food cold was a pain in the ass but this speaks to the wonder of the food to hold up well with flavours after so long on the table.
I really enjoyed the Salt and Pepper Squid and Fish – a great idea combining the two! The pho was phantastic and the sizzling beef was my favourite – such wonderful flavours. Everything tasted fresh and prepared with respect to ingredients and the people eating it. Huge compliments to the chef.
If Saigon Bowl was a lot closer to where I lived I would be a regular. The Vietnamese food was marvellous; beautiful to look at and packed with flavours and respect from the chef. The people of Strathfield are highly fortunate for this place being in their hometown.
