PLAYA TAKERIA is a small, fun, bustling, traditional Mexican venue on Darlinghurst Rd in Darlinghurst. The playas are a bunch of hot Mexican guys wearing sleeveless black t-shirts with bronzed guns on full show and the logo in fluro pink highlighting their gym visiting chests. Their idea was to bring the Mexican street stall food experience to Sydney and they have nailed it. They have been voted the Number 1 Mexican Food in Australia from Mr and Mrs Smith and Timeout claims they have the best burritos in Sydney. It is with thanks to the venue and my brethren at FCBA that I got to review this fantastic venue.

PLAYA TAKERIA VENUE:

PLAYA TAKERIA only seats thirty people. It is attention to detail, it is bright, it spills onto the pavement and everywhere you look is something interesting. They have brought back a lot of fun stuff from Mexico and you will see lots of vibrant colours to make you happy. Plenty of Calavera and crosses and wall murals you will want your photo in front of, preferably with one of the playas.

Inspired by the resort town of Playa Del Carmen, this Mexican restaurant fuses Caribbean vibrancy with a sense of the traditional Mexican taquerias. Playa Del Carmen is an epic beach resort town – it is beach heaven with crystal clear water, a lot of gorgeous tanned people and with them, amazing food, bars and clubs. Once you realise this the layout of PLAYA TAKERIA makes perfect sense. While the venue in Darlinghurst is amazing it really needs a sister venue or two on both Manly and Bondi beachfronts – where people would lose their shit over their food, gorgeous staff and insane cocktails.

PLAYA TAKERIA FOOD:

We firstly started with cocktails…..margaritas – some were awesome and some were not for me. A jalapeño margarita wasn’t my thing but others loved it, the guava Paloma did however make me squee. Being a Mexican venue of course they specialise in tequila and mezcal. Margaritas seem to be the most popular item to order and, of course, a constant jug of sangria will always compliment any meal.

The food leans towards brilliant snacking food that you could keep going and going and going with while you down abundant cocktails. I can imagine being in Playa Del Carmen at a venue exactly like this. The open venue spills onto the sand with crystal blue water in font of you. Bright vibrant lights, drinking margaritas endlessly with sangria chasers and picking at food for an entire day. Heaven and life goals all in one.

Don’t go here if you want an entree, main and dessert to yourself, PLAYA is all about sharing stall food. Tacos, nachos, burritos, empanadas and ceviche. They do some wickedly awesome healthy bowls that come with brown rice for the health conscious – basically most of the much loved meals have a healthy bowl option.

THE TACOS:

Their tacos are supreme – their Mahi Mahi fish taco is probably my favourite taco of the year. They offer six insane flavour combinations of tacos, mostly all soft tacos. The Mahi Mahi was beer battered fish, lettuce, marinated onions, lime and chipotle mayo. The chicken taco is chipotle chicken with guacamole and sour cream. The beef was insane; beef with salsa verde, coriander and onion. Simple done best.

If you’re in a group and you love your tacos – just get a TACO FUCKING LOVER plate or two – it has all their tacos for $39-. And Tuesdays is Taco Tuesdays – get four tacos for $20- – epic savings – more to spend on cocktails. Of course all the tacos will taste better if Juan is delivering them (see below) :).

And another thing PLAYA does well, is their sides and sauces. Their salsa verde is a refreshing side, the chipotle is easily my fave sauce and the habanero slightly melted the skin from the inside of my mouth :). All their chilli sauces are house made from the chillies themselves – nothing is out of the bottle. They brought out the bags of the chillies for us to see and it was impressive.

THE NACHOS:

PLAYA take their nachos to the next level. Hands down best nachos I have eaten this year. Below is head chef and master playa, David, with a selection of nachos. You choose between beef, chicken, pork or meatless and then they prep. It comes with corn shells (obviously), beans, Pico de Gallo salsa and jalapeños finished with guacamole and sour cream. BLISS – great share plate and while they encouraged me to use their sauces I just worshipped it as it was. For me the chicken was the winner but all the meat nachos were heaven. And vegans get excited – the meat free minus the sour cream will be one of the best things you will eat all year.

IN CONCLUSION:

PLAYA TAKERIA is a wickedly fun place. It is the place you want to catch up with friends over cocktails and Mexican snack foods. I could easily do long Sunday lunches at this place. The guys are gorgeous and hysterical fun, they definitely win best uniform for the year. It is what it is, it is not a fine dining Mexican restaurant – picture it on a beach and enjoy yourself and for the love of good food – get the fish tacos and nachos into you!!
