As usual I am chasing my tail with articles, the fine peeps at the NICHE MARKETING GROUP sent me some new products from the peeps at ORGRAN back in early June, just before my move. The sent me a chcoclate cake mix and a new biscuit; a raspberry flavoured gluten free fruit filled pillow biscuit. The biscuits took me straight back to my childhood, pillows were always my favourite biscuits. It should be known I ate the entire packet of biscuits on the day I started unpacking, they were all gone in one sitting, with a cuppa and plenty of boxes being unpacked. The cake was also the very first thing I ever baked in the new place and it also did not last long.
ORGRAN products are pretty bloody special – all their products are: GLUTEN FREE, WHEAT FREE, NUT FREE, DAIRY FREE, EGG FREE, YEAST FREE, GMO FREE, VEGAN. For this alone they win on every front and can be eaten by most allergy effected people and still provide an easy cake mix or other yummy items you can purchase for yourself and the family at Colesworth (Coles and Woolies) or other stockists. Not only do they do sweets – they also stock pastas and crackers and soups and their website HERE is amazing in that you can literally search all their products via ALLERGEN. While an Australian company they now ship to over 55 countries and their food plant is one of the only in the world that strictly adheres to absolutely no gluten on the premises. Think they are saints yet? They also have an environmental policy and waste reduction campaign to rival their food products.
While the biscuits were devoured, I cannot rave about them enough (there may be a few extra packets that found their way into my trolley at the shops), I did make and bake the cake to see what a healthy gluten free chocolate cake would taste like and I was impressed! To make the cake completely vegan you have to exclude the eggs and use an alternative in the mixture and a lady wrote to me about this on our Instagram, she had issue with it being “stodgy and not cooked properly even though it was in the oven 10min longer that the recipe stated.” For me – it came out brilliantly – mine did cook for 15min longer than the recipe stated though – but as I had just moved into the new place, had gone from gas to electricity I was not relying on the timer – I always do the skewer test on cakes and pull it out when the skewer yodels the joy of yumminess is ready to be removed! It should be noted – I did use eggs though.
It was your typical supermarket cake mix to buy and make, it was quick, it was fun and it required very little effort or extra ingredients – one of those perfect mixes to make with the kids, or just be a big kid yourself, more mixer licking for you then :). It cooked well and it cracked little. I was so desperate to eat it afterwards and while it is free of so many unhealthy items it tastes lighter and healthier, my problem with this is that I ate bigger pieces, and could not hold back on devouring the cake like a monster. I had nothing to accompany the cake and think it would have been ideal with some fresh berries and cream/icecream. The next time I make it, I will have some raspberries and vanilla ice-cream on hand.
Get into the ORGRAN goodies, suss their website HERE and stalk them on FB HERE to find out about new products and the joy of the stuff they have, and if you are coeliac sufferer these guys are a godesend for you and your family. I am not coeliac but prefer a limited gluten intake and am much healthier because of it.
Thanks to ORGRAN and NICHE MARKETING GROUP for sending these goodies to Spooning Australia for taste testing/ gorging on deliciousness.
