I visited KAFE NEO a little while back. I was recovering from a week in bed with the flu and had to get over an hour from home to get there. And I still absolutely loved it!
KAFE NEO VENUE:
KAFE NEO is a corner cafe in the suburb of Kogarah. It has a limited number of seats in the wooden furnished indoor and outdoor sections. By no means large at first glance it appears as just another cafe. It does coffee, breakfasts, lunches, more coffee, juices and pastries. But one thing was quickly evident on our visit – it was by no means just another cafe. It was constantly packed when we were there with a huge local patronage. People with dogs, families, couples, singles, black, white, gay, straight and everything in-between visited the cafe on or visit.
We had a table on the inside when we arrived and asked for an outdoor one if it became available. We were close to the back wall and people had to lean around us to get water and glasses, it was a little sardine-like for us. It was warm-toned with all the wood and the roof had a bunch of cool lights strung up and also these retro brass coloured balls. We managed to get an outdoor table before the food was served.
One thing stood out above all else at Kafe Neo………. the staff. I am not sure if most of them were family but if not they acted it. The staff were mostly young and all smiles and assistance, efficient and welcoming. The cheeky barista will be quite popular with the ladies, and ….cough….. gents of the cute persuasion haha :).
The coffee was good (Campos for the caffeine addicts), well it was for all the people ordering it, I have now stopped drinking the brown juice of the gods and am a teetotaller. As I was recovering from the flu I also went with a ginger and lemon tea with honey. It was exactly what I needed. My dining partner in crime, Granny from the Ume Burger review, went a Special Smoothie – a Green Smoothie – Spinach, Avocado, Apple, Banana and Coconut. She loved it and only drank half as she insisted the sick boy needed all his greens. It was delicious.
They do lots of smoothies, lots of juices, cater to lactose people and even serve an affogato – truly after mine own heart.
The food is cafe fare with a healthy twist. Basic breakfasts, mueslis, eggs Benny and then fancier healthier breakfasts and omelettes. The lunch is a more vast experience with burgers, schnitty, pastas and salads. There is also a sammy section on the menu that looks good. A bonus for families will be a kid’s section on the menu and a bonus for us all – it’s an all day breakfast and lunch menu. They do cater for all.
WHAT WE ATE:
HEALTHY BREAKFAST: 2x poached eggs, avocado, spinach and mushrooms “served on toast.” It was stunning and I want that dinner plate set. Granny devoured this one and she loved it. If I was getting it I would order a side of bacon and it would be close to perfect. My only tiny gripe – I have to have my eggs on toast – on the menu it even says “served on toast” but everything was clearly off the toast. It is the most minor gripe of all time and I have debated this with friends and fellow foodies who much prefer the toast on the side so it doesn’t sog – I love it soggy as long as my egg is on top of bread.
SPICY CHICKEN BURGER: Here is what I posted on insta the day after visiting. “I would rarely order a lunch burger for a breakfast but when @kafe_neo has all day breakfast/lunch and their chicken burger sounds too good what am I to do? I have fallen for this place in Kogarah – it’s just amazing!! SPICY CHICKEN BURGER: spicy chicken tenderloin, lettuce, tomato, bacon, mayo and cheese. Perfect combo and that spicy marinade was bloody spicy – loved it!! On the Fat Bastard Spoonometer of Burglery Foodgasms this one’s a 4.2/5 from me. Get into it!!” That pretty much sums it up haha.
Big thanks to Tania (in the middle below) for making the visit so wonderful and bravo to the entire crew for a great venue. This visit was arranged with thanks to the wonderful Claire McPherson ad the CPM Online Marketing Team.
I will rarely be in this area of Sydney but if I ever get an excuse I will take it so I can return to this fantastic place. Great food, great venue and the best of all, great people. What more can you ask for?
