Someone let the bloggers out into their natural habitat, a cafe with glorious food and decent lighting for multiple angled photography shots of joy and foodgasms galore. The fantastic people from FCBA: FOOD CRITICS AND BLOGGERS OF AUSTRALIA teamed up with a newish and somewhat unique cafe in Surry Hills. I just assumed HAVEN TAILORING COFFEE JOYOUSLY would be a standard cafe, we would get a coffee and some bacon and eggs and be thanked for taking some good shots and blogging/ social media promoting said venue. Instead we got a smack of awesome in the face and had one of the most amazing food blogging experiences I have had.
The FCBA peeps run a marketing company and have quite a few clients and contacts in the food industry but wanted to do something more, they wanted to help shrink the gap between venues and bloggers/ writers. It’s win win for everyone really, they may have a cafe client that needs promotion, what better way to do it than to get bloggers to spread the word on blogs and social media. It gives venues free advertising (it will always help if their product is good) and the bloggers/ writers get to try out something new and the best part of the day for me was meeting so many other bloggers, it was like a blogger’s social and I met some great new contacts and friends and had an absolute ball. FCBA wanted to promote that eating and food is life and we are part of that life.
HAVEN TAILORING COFFEE JOYOUSLY is between the two Surry Hills exits from Central Station and directly across the road. The venue is large and these guys are like artisan masters in coffee, tea and food. They do a flat white but they are more coffee worshippers than your morning barista. We ordered our first coffee and then had a kind of tutorial on how to tailor coffee for better appreciation. Their beans are from heavenly monks living in rainbows that ride unicorns, it was amazing. It was like comparing cask wine to drinking a fine Grange. You get your usual coffee card that gets the stamp and eventually you get a free coffee but it is a double card and you select if you prefer more aromatic, more sweet, more acidic and so on until you build your perfect style and they make the thing for you! I can only drink decaf and prefer a mocha and when the owner asked everyone at the table what kind of coffee they drank I kept quiet as was sitting at the end of the table and thought he would just ignore me, thanks to my good friend Dan O who joined me for breakfast and yelled out DECAF!! – you could say it caused a lot of laughter but our host assured me mocha and decaf could be just as tailored and wow – everyone stopped laughing when my mocha arrived. It wasn’t sweet, it was perfect in every way and was slightly bitter from using the best of chocolate, it was more couverture, cacao and had hints of aniseed. I found it more chocolate than coffee but afterwards I had a definite buzz.
Besides the coffee we then had our minds blown by some of the most amazing food for a breakfast I have seen and all the bloggers went into high gear shooting oodles of pics. I did not shoot them but they have an entire series of Tea Inspired food. The best looking was a ROSE TEA INFUSED STICKY BLACK RICE PUDDING WITH COCONUT SAGO AND RUBY GRAPEFRUIT and another, one I am actually going back to eat on my own coin, ROASTED BRUSSELS SPROUTS WITH SMOKY LAPSANG SOUGHING TEA WITH SMOKED MACKEREL, WATERCRESS, GOATS CHEESE AND SPECKS (HELLO!!!!!!!).
But then there was what I did order, you may have an inkling I am slightly burger obsessed so I had an open breakfast(ish) burger – PORK BELLY KIMCHEESE BURGER!! Five spices roasted pork belly, kimchi, bocconcini cheese, grated apples, kale (it even tasted nice :)) sesame omelette and shaved radish $19. I may have experienced a multiple foodgasm, it was out of this world!! I decided to eat it open – but Dan O was disappointed I did not close it and embrace it like the true burger obsessed freak that I am.
Dan indulged in the G’MORNING HAVEN BIG BREAKFAST – two poached eggs, avocado, balsamic roasted cherry tomatoes, broad bean pesto and crispy bacon on soy & linseed toast. $18-. This dish was also mind blowing, my standard for breakfast is ALWAYS the big breakfast however the burger had to win out for me. I got a taste of this beauty though and I would definitely enjoy it for a meal, but not while that burger is on the menu haha.
Below is how Dan O’s coffee arrived, filtered masterpiece, he got a cold filtered coffee and I had a taste and agree with Dan’s assessment, “probably the smoothest coffee I have ever had.” I can’t indulge but this was an amazing coffee. Plus the presentation is purely decadent and reminded me of rich people’s whiskey or brandy in the decanter. The filtered coffees came with a side dish containing what we can only guess was next-to-pure cacao beads you can chew on. My mocha came with them on top and I found them slightly aniseed but with Dan O’s some tasted sweet and some bitter, this could literally be from what taste buds it rolled over.
Then we got surprise treats, MASFOGATOS to share. 73% Madagascan Dark Chocolate Brownie, with frozen mascarpone and a shot of house blend espresso $130. Everyone wanted the “pour” photo and I was the hand model and I bloody stuffed it and poured espresso everywhere hahaha. This was definitely not your standard affogato, it was unique and again, like everything else at Haven, nuanced and balanced in its delicate flavour combinations. My one huge gripe about this dessert: they are not made to be shared with four people, I need one of these all to myself next time 🙂
For a unique, totally amazing breakfast or lunch cafe experience, that is incredibly affordable, HAVEN TAILORING COFFEE JOYOUSLY is up there as one of the best in Sydney for me, I will be venturing back again and again. But do not be put off by the nuance and specialty coffees, they still can churn out quick takeaways for your morning commute, the bonus is it will still taste nicer than most and eventually you can tailor it to your own tastes.
