Another one of my favourite discoveries while in Canberra for work has been GREASE MONKEY; greasy gooey burgers, fried chicken, greasy breakfasts, a licensed bar, milkshakes and wicked desserts all in one awesome venue that has some tongue-in-cheek design. You can’t ask for much more than that. I had read some negative reviews for the place that came out just after it opened but it had been going for a few months longer when I decided to give it a shot. Tucked away in Braddon, ACT I think it is about 10min out of the city and it is right near the MANDALAY BUS I wrote about last week.
The place is definitely set up in an old mechanic’s place or a servo, just has the entire layout for it, it has the high roof for lifting cars, it has that big entrance to drive them in and it has the outdoor side section that works superbly for the outdoor seating are for the venue. Plus it has the double entendre of a) venue name b) nickname for a mechanic and it also adds to their greasy food and monkey motif, winning on every level for the naming really.
I looked like a total noob idiot trying to work out how to get to the outside area, it was a little cold but wanted better lighting for pics outside, see that exit sign above? That’s the way out – also I think I kept trying to push it and a waitress had to explain it was a slide door – my intellectually gifted aura faded :).
The place is big, fun, bright, warm, comforting and a place I would love to spend many nights in getting fatter on burgers and getting drunk on beer 🙂 It just has that feel, almost a bar feel, a more comfortable less noisy better laid out MARY’s, and the bonus was I waited less than 15min for my meal, an ideal scenario for awesome burgers in Canberra :).
They do a greasy breakfast on Saturdays and Sundays from 10-3 and are open generally from 11am (10am on weekends) till late and then it is six choices of burger, with abundant extras, greasy fried chicken and two desserts I need to try from 11am onwards.
I ALWAYS order the signature burger unless I have had it on a previous visit and I always ask what is their signature or most popular burger. They have a standard cheese burger called the GREASY, exactly what you would expect from a good cheese burger and then mine: DOUBLE DELUXE – double beef, double cheese, bacon, GM ketchup, onion, pickles, mustard and Greasy’s sauce. $17-.
It was EPIC and everything I would want in a burger, sublimely cooked patties, gooey melted American cheese, mmmmmmm bacon, GM ketchup, flavoursome onions and pickles, mustard and then their secret “Greasy’s Sauce” – very much a rib’s styled American BBQ sauce from what I could get out of the lovely waitress who came and chatted to me for a while when she saw me taking pics – all served on a splendid brioche bun.
The waitress happily chatted about the place, where they were going and how the place had improved since opening. This service really added to the experience and gave the place a very welcoming air to it, laid back and so friendly, something experienced a lot less in Sydney.
They also have a NIMBIN burger for the veggies that is made with portobello mushrooms, an incredible looking DIRTY BIRD that is their southern fried chicken burger (I need this in my belly) and a PITT STOP burger which is a divine sounding burger I will eat one day soon: slow cooked bbq pork brisket, apple cider slaw and habanero mayo $15 – DIVINE!!!
For drinks I had a yummy CAPI GINGER BEER for $5- and if I didn’t need to get back to work I would have loved to spend the afternoon there with a big bowl of friend chicken and then perhaps finish off with an Ice Cream sandwich with salted caramel that everyone has raved about for $7-.
I bloody loved the bubbler wall art in the outside courtyard area 🙂
And some final subtle art on the gate I left by – also above this on the outer upper wall it says “BURGERS YOU’LL GO APESH*T OVER” – I just fell in love with the place seeing all the subtle tongue-in-cheek artsy things for the venue that personalised it and gave it abundant character.
I have eaten a lot of burgers in the last year and GREASE MONKEY comes in my top 3 burger joints in Australia. Just love the place and that burger – OMG – can’t wait to return and indulge in the others.
