I am on a roll at the moment – so busy and eating out most of the week, if not eating out I am at movie review screenings and when I am home I am exhausted. I crash on the couch and can barely function – this is between writing articles (of course) or actually at my day job. Life is similar for most people these days – there is no time whatsoever because of life’s demands and our own servitude to the rat race. Over the last few years pre-made delivery meals have truly taken off. Gourmet Dinner Service and Dietliscious are two recent ones I am reviewing today.
ABOUT GOURMET DINNER SERVICE AND DIETLICIOUS:
Gourmet Dinner Service home delivers premium meals, made with fresh ingredients and then flash frozen or vacuum sealed to lock in the goodness and flavour. Loved by foodies and the time poor, Gourmet Dinner Service meals are both convenient and delicious! Established in Sydney in 1994, Gourmet Dinner Service has since expanded operations to Brisbane and Melbourne. Gourmet Dinner Service and Dietlicious are owned by the same people I believe and offer similar meals. The difference is Dietlicious takes it to the dietary level and also offers cleanses and calorie plans for weight loss.
THEIR FOOD PHILOSOPHY:
We believe that the best meals start with finding the finest produce.
That’s why all their food is fresh every day from markets, farms and trusted local suppliers. Fruit and vegetables are chosen for seasonal perfection, their seafood is top quality, including sashimi grade Tasmanian salmon, and all meat and chicken is hormone free.
There are no preservatives, additives or genetically modified anything. Just fresh, natural ingredients, imagination and epicurean expertise. They are then flash frozen or vacuum sealed to lock in all the goodness and flavour. All you need to do is heat and eat.
They believe that if you have a selection of convenient, healthy meals on hand, it’s easy to eat well. And I couldn’t agree more! It’s easy to order a pizza if you nothing in the freezer so don’t have nothing in the freezer, have good food!
WHAT I GOT DELIVERED:
- Smoked salmon and potato salad. Smoked salmon with roasted kipfler potatoes tossed in apple cider dressing
- Lamb and fetta salad with balsamic dressing, finished with toasted almonds
- Teriyaki Salmon with Pumpkin Mash and Broccoli
- Penne with a red capsicum sauce, chicken, spinach leaves and olives
- Eggplant parmigiana
WHAT I THOUGHT:
I am now in love with these meals. I have recently tried another meal service provider but it was all fresh from their kitchen – everything had to be eaten in a couple of days and this didn’t suit my lifestyle because I am in and out all the time and need meals that are frozen and can be easily heated and prepped. The organisation of Gourmet Dinner Service and the packaging is superb. For the smoked salmon salmon, there was the salad section in a container, the smoked salmon in another container and a heated section, the potatoes, you microwave them for a certain amount of time and add them all together. Each meal is clearly instructed to show you the minimal requirements you need to do to serve it.
The smoke salmon salad was sublime – this was not a frozen meal, you need to eat this one in the week delivered. It was easily the best meal I have ever taken to work and the envy of co-workers made it all the more enjoyable. The lamb and feta salad was similar, the lamb needed to be heated and added. It was also delicious. The teriyaki salmon with mashed pumpkin and broccoli was sublime – a meal I will be ordering again.
I cannot locate the penne on their menu at the moment. I can locate the pasta sauces though. So I gather you can make your own pasta and ingredients and add with the pasta sauce. It was enjoyable, I did add a bunch of my own parmesan to this one. I don’t normally eat tomato based dishes, never been a huge fan. But the eggplant parmigiana was interesting and I did woof it down – you can probably also thank the cheesy gooeyness for that.
The meals were fantastic in flavour and easy to prepare and actually fairly affordable. You are paying for the quality. The salads are all under $14- and I think this is perfectly fine as I pay more for this in food courts for lunch. I will definitely be ordering some more of the smoked salmon salad – it was perfection on a plate. The mains range from $14.50 to $19.90 which is still cheaper than ordering a pizza and the quality is impressive. It’s no more supermarket frozen Lean Cuisine shite, this stuff is quality prepared by proper chefs. They also offer some impressive family meals that feed up to six people that probably work out cheaper than what you would pay for a nice meal – actually thinking of cheating my next dinner party.
I think the entire idea behind Gourmet Dinner Service and Dietlicious is marvellous. If it can save me time and provide me with nutritious, delicious and easy to make affordable meals then I am in. It was worth it alone for the meal envy of work colleagues. I will be ordering again.
