I was lucky to be in contact with FROGMORE CREEK about a lunch visit while touring in Tasmania with mother dearest. It is one of the best venues I have ever had the pleasure to dine in and a culinary experience I will never forget. It is also my number one venue of 2017 and will take a culinary god to beat it. I will point out my entire meal was comped, excluding all of the wine we bought. But mum is not swayed by freebies and she argued with me this needs to receive my first six out of five score.
FROGMORE CREEK VENUE:
FROGMORE CREEK is located at Cambridge in Tasmania. It is about 20mins from Hobart if I can remember correctly and close to the town of Richmond so make a day of it, Richmond is cool. On a side note: the Richmond Bakery make the best Curry Scallop Pies I could find). But I digress, FROGMORE CREEK is an incredibly well known famous vineyard and that is for three or more reasons. Firstly, the wine, it is internationally recognised and a drop of plonk I now worship. Secondly the food, more on that later, and finally the venue. It is truly sublime.
All blue on outside and all stunning wood on the inside. One quarter is probably wine, gift shopping and bench tasting. One half is dedicated to beautiful dining while taking in views suitable for a Lord of the Rings movie and the last quarter is more dining space but reserved for larger groups. The lay out feels very feng shui and the venue is so comfortable and so beautiful you may never want to leave. Throw in their lovely wines and you may not be able to leave.
FROGMORE CREEK WINE:
Alain Rousseau and John Bown are the wine maestros and they know their stuff. Their wines are fruit-driven with only enough additional intervention, oak particularly, to provide subtle complexity and enhancement to the basic fruit flavours. I loved every drop I drank and was incredibly grateful mum was driving this day. Their wine has won awards since their first ever wine, a 2002 Reserve Pinot. Their awards list is 4x A4 pages long – you will find it on their website.
I started with their Riesling over lunch then moved to the Pinot Noir. Among the bottles bought I had to have their Iced Riesling Botrytis, it was next level and a rare bottle they only sell every few years, I think it is every seven. But that wine is all gone and I won’t open mine until my bi-annual wine snobs dinner. I really wished I bought more of them. A Chardy and a Pinot may have also found their way into my suitcase.
FROGMORE CREEK FOOD:
The food is the best I have ever seen plated. Period. It is also some of the best food I have ever eaten. Considering this it is no wonder they are Restaurant of the year (Regional Australia) for 2015 /2016 AHA Awards for Excellence and Tasmanian Restaurant of the Year for 2015/2016 THA Awards for Excellence. The plating was so good my mum curtsied to the chefs and thanked them for their wizardry. Watching them plate was like watching an artist paint a canvas, just much quicker. Everything was unique and nuanced and made to look like a painting. It was food that truly complimented one of the best views in the world to dine from. Please take note the dishes are seasonal so menu changes are imminent based on availability of produce.
Mum and I kept it light, on the down-low we came here from a HUGE breakfast photo shoot at a sweets shop and were worried about belly room. We only ate a main each and then shared a dessert. We considered ordering a third main to share after the awesomeness of the first two but decided to appreciate what we had and share the dessert.
The menu selection is dishes from the land, sea and garden; a tribute to the beautiful produce of Tasmania and the diversity of kitchens around the world.
I had the pork of course. Slow cooked pork belly, pulled pork croquette, potato crisps, rhubarb compote, pickled cabbage, apple puree and piccalilly mayonnaise. And it was only $25- for this work of art. They are not huge dishes, the venue actually recommends you have two but honestly it was all I needed. Everything on this dish was so nuanced and so balanced I nearly cried. Not only was it one of the most incredible things I have ever eaten – it was basically instagram porn on a plate. I had never seen anything like it.
MUM’S SEAFOOD PLATE:
Roasted prawns, spicy Thai fish cakes, potato & lemon puree, white anchovies, watermelon, tom yum mayonnaise. Again it was more perfection. Mum was in heaven and finally realised why I love food blogging so much. It’s the little discoveries like this that I will remember for the rest of my life that make it all worthwhile.
One dish a lot of people ordered I will have if I get to return was a vegetarian dish. It looked even more artistic than our dishes, believe it or not. It was crispy feta, spinach & sun dried tomato wontons, wakame & cabbage salad, compressed watermelon and basil snow.
While we sipped a second wine we pondered the desserts. Four desserts all $18 and a giant cheese platter for $36. They do their style of elegant insane nuance on a brûlée, a sticky date and a semifreddo but the one that stuck out for us was their Textures of Citrus. Almond tuille, vanilla & mascarpone mousse, lemon ice cream, freeze dried fruit, orange, yuzu gel, mini meringues and milk crumble. It was insane – next level brilliant. So refreshing and so colourful, just like the other dishes. Everything went together as well as bacon and eggs.
Firstly please note the mother dearest in the above pic – she hasn’t starred in a Spooning post in years. She explained this has to be more than my Top Rated 5 Spoon Venue. Her justification. “This is more like those hotels in Dubai that get a 6 or even a 7 Star Rating in the Hotel World – FROGMORE CREEK has to be scored beyond the norm.”
We both had a fantastic holiday in Tasmania, a truly remarkable place if considering a holiday. I don’t have a cache of superlatives large enough to describe my love of FROGMORE CREEK. Huge thanks and congratulations to such a wonderful team of people in making everything they do next level awesome.
