Happy Boxing Day from Australia everyone. I hope you all had an amazing and terribly fun Christmas for 2017. I thought a bright and punchy article was in order for Boxing Day. And I also thought I would try a new style of post – let me know what you think – all the pics in a slider? Or spread out through the article? But enough about the aesthetics, let’s talk about one of the greatest Sydney cafes of 2017, CUPPA FLOWER. Big thanks to foodie fam friend Tammi, @teafortammi, who won a voucher to visit CUPPA FLOWER and invited a bunch of us foodies with her. I have never seen anything so instaporn worthy that was also incredibly delicious.
CUPPA FLOWER VENUE:
CUPPA FLOWER has two venues, their main venue in Waterloo and a smaller venue in Mascot. We hit up the Waterloo venue and from what I have been advised the Mascot venue doesn’t offer as much of the amazing goodies and treats. The Waterloo venue is quite large and sits on a quiet street corner among the Waterloo apartment complexes. You walk up a few stairs to a small amount of tables at the entry. On the right is two or three couple’s tables and on the left is the insta-famed, large rustic blue table, the only table to sit at if you are a food blogger or grammer! Then there is the entry into what will be a very crowded cafe at any time of the day. To the left, after you enter, is their actual florist. Yep, they sell flowers too, and also offer abundant loads of them for photos. The counter (and cakes display) is at the back left and the roof is tall, allowing lots of natural light to flood in from the big windows running down the right side of the cafe.
The inside is high energy due to the amount of patronage and I am very grateful we had the large blue table outside, our only downfall was that everyone wanted to take photos of our food spread as they came in or out. It should be known there was also a small queue of people waiting for tables.
THE WONDERFUL RAINBOW OF DELIGHTS THAT IS CUPPA FLOWER FOOD:
CUPPA FLOWER is about colourful and fun food and drink. There is also a lot of healthy delights there and it is uncertain as to whether the food compliments the florist or the florist compliments the food. The plating often looks like the bouquets. They have decent coffees, cold pressed juices and a wonderful tea menu that includes bloom teas that open in the water. There are smoothies, frappuccino’s, iced teas, fizzy juices and milkshakes. The milkshakes and frappuccino’s are as colourful as the meals.
The breakfast menu runs all day and a lot of it reads standard but is anything but. The lunch menu runs from 1130am to 230pm and is a little more restaurant than cafe. I would suggest a mix of the two menus when dining and ENSURE you have the Totoro cakes in there somewhere – they are light and delightful and while not overly flavoursome are something of a rite of passage when dining at CUPPA FLOWER. The cakes aren’t on the menu so go up to the counter to see what they are serving and if you want to take Totoro cakes away, from memory, they will only do this after 130pm so they don’t run out. There is also a small kid’s menu but I would suggest you just order from the menu tapas style and all share everything, kid’s included, everything is so colourful the kids will want to eat it all.
WHAT WE FEASTED ON:
Basically everything hahaha. As soon as the venue discovered Tammi was a prize winner and we were all food bloggers/ grammers/ photographers they kept bringing us more stuff to shoot. I didn’t eat from brunch until about 10pm that night with a pre-bed snack.
- Pitaya Island Bowl with kiwi, blueberries, muesli, roasted coconut, pumpkin seeds and almond flakes
- Omurice – crab meat fried rice served with avocado and tomato salsa topped with fish roe
- Seasonal Fruit Salad
- Smoked salmon bruschetta with asparagus, sesame seeds, dills and fish roe mayonnaise
- Giant Tempura Soft Shelled Crabbed Croissant with fried eggs, fish roe and sriracha mayonnaise – THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST DISHES OF 2017
- Cuppa Flower Special Rice Noodles with beef in special homemade sauce with pistachio, peanuts, lemon wedges, fried shallots and coriander
- Sea Scallops Pasta – linguine pasta, chillies, garlic and basil sauce, sautéed grape tomatoes and spinach
- Totoro Cakes and Crepe Cakes
- Matcha lattes, Red Velvet lattes and Taro lattes
- Passion Fruits Mints Iced Tea
- Red Velvet and Taro Frappuccino
WHAT WE THOUGHT:
I honestly could not fault anything. The plating would inspire Monet and Van Gogh and it wasn’t presentation over product as the food was superb. Even the simplest of meals, like a Season Fruit Bowl aka a fruit salad was served with honey to drizzle, yoghurt and plating that looked like a painters palette. The lattes were mind blowing and so colourful – I LOVE RED VELVET and TARO lattes and/or frappuccinos – so bright and sweet and as I no longer drink coffee, heaven. For a hot day the Iced Teas were works of art and incredibly refreshing.
If you love fruit bowls or acai bowls you will be in heaven and the smoked salmon bruschetta is a perfect light snack.
While the scallop pasta and beef rice noodles were delicious they felt out of place with the more brighter breakfast items. But everyone did love that beef noodle dish – this would be a favourite in winter.
The last two dishes I have to mention are the crab meat fried rice omelette and the giant tempura soft shelled crab croissant. Both of these are two of the best meals of the year for me. That omelette was out of this world and I have never eaten a more softer soft shelled crab before. And it was inside possibly the biggest croissant I have seen. Having yolk porn ooze all over it with the salty pop of the fish roe is something I will remember for the rest of my life – especially when I return to have it multiple more times in the future. This is a MUST ORDER dish!! As of course are the uber cute Totoro treats.
One of my favourite venues of the year, CUPPA FLOWER is a food art venue. I prefer the breakfast items over the lunch items and if you have an instagram account and want shameless likes just order and photograph food from here – it’s a guaranteed win win, especially if you can score the blue table out the front. Crab croissant is a dish I will dream of for the rest of my life. Bravo to the peeps from CUPPA FLOWER. This is definitely a venue that stands out from thousands of other venues.
