Yep, McDonald’s happened and I am writing a review of their “newish” Create Your Taste, probably the biggest development and change to the operating process of Maccas since they introduced drive-throughs. This was a blogger’s/ winner’s lunch from Instagram foodie blogger imstillhungry_. He teamed up with Nuffnang and Maccas and ran a competition to win a free Create Your Taste lunch. The idea: share a Create Your Taste creation on Instagram and give it a name, he would judge and invite the winners to join him for lunch. He is a great food photographer so he was also offering some food photography tips and for me, I needed to hang with food bloggers, they are my people :).
The Create Your Taste program put on about 20000 new Maccas employees from what I read about a month ago (can’t confirm this though), it is Maccas’ endeavour to take on the gourmet burger movement that is taking the world by storm. Burgers have become culinary indulgences that are not only foodgasmic works of wonder but also works of art, as you may he seen on any of my sites or social media feeds this last year. Create Your Taste is the Maccas’ version of this and it is a bloody brilliant idea from the peeps at Maccas. The stores now have large touchscreens that are very user friendly to assist in creating your own personalised masterpiece, you select everything you want on the burger from about 30 ingredients (soon to increase) and the only limit is your stomach and bank account, I have seen a burger with twelve patties. The above burger cost me about $17 including chips and a large drink. Each Maccas has a waiter that assists people with the touch screen selection and then there are burger builders that create your stack once the order has been placed and these burgers are presented restaurant styled; on a large chopping board with a basket of fries. No more boxes for Create Your Taste.
My above creation was 2x Angus patties, Jack Cheese, Long Pickles, Jalapenos, Tomato, Lettuce and Big Mac sauce on a brioche bun – I shall name it The #1.
Above was my second creation, this time at the blogger’s lunch. I called this one the AVO SPICY NOMNOM. Brioche bun, 2x Angus patties, Jack Cheese, Swiss Cheese, Guacamole, Tomato, Long Pickles, jalapenos, Big Mac Sauce and Chipotle Aioli. It was sublime, it was messy and I succeeded thanks to a handful of napkins, the beard tends to collect sauces 🙂 I need to eat with a towel when indulging in these things :). The jalapenos and chipotle aioli gave a huge kick – it was delightful and I will definitely order this exact creation again.
From above that’s my burger on the right – I do love the presentation of the burgers on the boards and the place has a more restaurant feel, waiters come around asking how your meal is and even the manager came out to see how the piggish bloggers stacked their burgers. You could say the people in the restaurant all thought we were freaks – seeing food bloggers together with cameras out is like a tourist bus at the Opera House, there is a LOT of photos being taken!
And it isn’t all about how big you can get your burger – the above is from fashion/food blogger BLOOMING__HEARTS – she went with brioche bun, three sauces, two cheeses, Angus Patty, gherkins & caramelised onions. “The perfect burger for after a sleazy night out” – and hence she named it the SLEAZY CHEEZY.
Then there was burger obsessed crazy man food blogger willxia1 known for his oversized monstrous burger love. We were limited to only two patties on our selections but trust me, he would comfortably order six patties if he could. His above creation; The YES.I.WILL: bakery bun, 2x Angus patties, 3 x Colby Jack cheese, 3 x crispy bacon, grilled mushrooms, long sliced pickles, whole leaf lettuce, Big Mac sauce and red onion. It looked bloody amazing!!! I would happily eat that burger and then sleep it off 🙂
And the final burger I shot was new fashion and food blogger THEOUTFITLOG‘s burger – his creation was the ON THE FARM: Angus patty, crispy bacon, egg with fresh lettuce, tomato, chilli jam, Chipotle mayo and BBQ sauce, served on a baker’s bun. The bun behind his is also the cover photo burger from food blogging guru nutellasum – Natalie Sum is a food photography legend with nearly 30k Insta followers – I was a little in awe, especially at her relaxed shooting of a few pics that turn out like they should be framed in my house! She created: 2x Angus patties with Swiss, cheddar, caramelized onions, grilled mushrooms and Big Mac sauce on brioche… she called this the MCTELLASUM.
The one thing that the burger elite whine about on the online burger groups is that while the burgers are a great innovation from Maccas they are let down because they still use the same Angus patties that is in Grand Angus-like gourmet burgers (don’t tell anyone – I LOVE THE GRAND ANGUS haha). My solution to this is to always double the patties in CYT and honestly they are enjoyable. I wrote a positive review of the Create Your Taste on burger forums/ FB groups when I first tried it and you could say I was torn apart by people not even willing to try it. I have grown up on Maccas and while CYT is not as epic as the burger art of the elite establishments and burger chefs, for McDonald’s it is bloody amazing. I have had CYT twice now and I will definitely eat it again, and a small secret that may or may not have meant to have come out on Saturday, more patty options are soon to launch :).
I was an invited guest to this lunch and did not pay anything but if it was shit I would tell you regardless. If you are an Instagrammer – totes stalk the people I had lunch with, there were a few other bloggers present but sorry, I did not shoot their burger 🙁 – they all know their stuff and have a gazillion more followers than me 🙂 Great lunch and special thanks to Michael aka imstillhungry_. Have you had Create Your Taste? What do you think?
