When I make my quarterly trips to Canberra for work I research all the delicious venues I can visit on my budget and then list them by lunch, dinner, sweets etc then schedule one venue per meal to try and discover all the culinary goodness Canberra has to offer. I love it and seeing as though my trips are solo trips I have something to look forward to for every meal, OK and the one meal I go out with my friends, the Schmollinghams, always look forward to that :). I never found the BURMESE CURRY PLACE in my research, instead I found it by word of mouth over dinner the previous night as I indulged at BRODBURGER, two really nice med students told me I “HAD TO EAT THERE” – done – it was on the list. So while I sit here on my next visit I thought I should write up the last venue from my last visit, the very cool little BURMESE CURRY PLACE.
The BURMESE CURRY PLACE is right near the bus interchange in Civic, it has a few indoor and a few more outdoor tables and the place has been there for a very long time. It has become a Canberra institution with comparisons to the Soup Nazi on some sites, not because the owners are mean freaks, on the contrary they are all happy smiling staff who offered me abundant help. No the comparisons stem from the business of the venue and also the way the militant members of the public in the queue will organise you to make and get your order.
The place is completely no frills, it is the basics of everything, they do not even take cards and there are no receipts provided. There are only NINE items on the menu and you can choose two of them for $7 takeaway and $8 eat in. If you get a drink with your meal it is still under $10- and the generous part of the order, the meals are abundant, more than you could imagine paying that price for.
THE NINE ITEMS ON THE MENU:
- Chicken and Potato
- Egg Curry
- Sweet Pork
- Fish Cake
- Fish Curry
- Beef and Potato
- Prawn and Chicken
- Chicken and Bean
Now I was not in the know as to what to eat so asked them what I should eat, they said definitely #7 – THE CHICKEN PRAWN CURRY – this way I get chicken and prawns and also what ever else I wanted. I actually just asked for one plate of double CHICKEN PRAWN CURRY. Since then I have read about the place online and there are web articles seriously debating the ultimate combination from BURMESE CURRY HOUSE – by the way it is unanimous – #4 & #7 is the ultimate combination. That is what I had, CHICKEN PRAWN CURRY and then the FISH CAKES with it – actually sounds nice, but I do want some EGG CURRY at some stage! They look AMAZING!!!
Seriously, this thing could be double the price and I would still rave about it, so flavorsome and so packed with prawns, something you would never expect, and I know you can’t see many or any in the picture haha – my bad, a few got picked off by hungry self 🙂 This place will become a regular on my Canberra visits, especially now I know, cash only, two counters, order at one, collect at the other and do not get out of order or meals get screwed up 🙂 I have been told the queues can get really large with uni students, city workers and people with good taste or good judgement in budget eating so plan your eating at BURMESE CURRY PLACE and get there at the start or the end of the lunch feed time, not smack bang in the middle.
Had to post another pic of the CHICKEN AND PRAWN CURRY – not only did I only have one dish but you can see prawns and chillies in this one – MUST EAT – get in there for #4 & #7 stat!!
