When my burger partner in crime, Dan O and I started hunting down burgers, he suggested that I HAD TO VISIT Belaroma Coffee Centre, in Balgowlah to have their double fried chicken burger. Was he nuts? Belaroma is a coffee centre, in Manly Vale, the place that made my entire unit smell like roasting coffee for the seven years I lived in Manly Vale, what was this madman talking about? Well time to burger up; Dan O and I made a Sunday lunch date for 12, in usual style he turned up at 1 and we tucked in to burgers.
Belaroma is literally a large coffee centre in suburbia/ industrial settings – they do everything; roasting, selling bulk, selling multiple styles, cold dripping, Barista training (actually thinking I might do this course myself and write about it), coffee machines, making a zillion coffees a day and also having a huge cafe. I had enjoyed some coffees and pastries there in my time, but I honestly smelled their roasting day in and day out and as such I rarely thought of actually eating there. When Dan O suggested they had incredible burgers I truly did scoff, “the guy’s coffee drunk” went through my mind. His firm words “the double fried chicken burger will change your life!” echoed.
In my hour wait for he of no internal clock, I decided to order the burger, to hell with waiting, sadly, I was told the double fried chicken burger was one of their specials and not on the menu on this day so I could not have it but would I like the Deluxe Beef Burger (another special), of course I would, had come all this way, the massive journey from Brookvale – “feed me boy!”
The Deluxe Beef Burger – this thing is a good sized burger that holds impressive structural integrity, no cutlery required and limited spillage – you will get all the goodness. For something quite medium in burgerland size it is epic in ingredients. I got the full list of ingredients this morning from chef, Chris Blatchford.
THE DELUXE BEEF BURGER:
- The beef burger patty is house made ground beef patty made from chuck steak 85% lean, this gives us it a firm & tasty patty they only season with salt & pepper to make the beef prominent.
- Beetroot relish is house made from Cooks Co-op beetroots from Martin Boetz’s farm on the Hawkesbury.
- The rocket is also from Cooks Co-op farm.
- The bacon is dry cured “Kassler bacon” (German style short cut ) from Australian pork.
- The cheese is Provolone.
- The egg is a Free Range Hawkesbury fried egg.
- The brioche roll is handmade from Shepherds Bake House.
- The aioli is a house made lemon & garlic aioli.
- The chips are beer battered house chips, with fresh rosemary (from their very own herb garden ) & Murray River Salt.
The BEEF DELUXE BURGER is part of their specials – they rotate fortnightly, so you may want to call ahead to discover what they have on the day you are visiting. They also have…………..
· Pork belly, Apple slaw & mango chutney on a brioche roll with beer battered chips.
· Double fried chicken, rainbow slaw , chipotle mayonnaise on a brioche roll with beer battered chips.
Dan O and I were there for the DOUBLE FRIED CHICKEN burger, it is Dan O’s unicorn – a perfect 5 pickle score burger, based on the Fatties Burger Appreciation Society Facebook Group scoring system (we are both avid members) but sadly it was not on offer on this fine day, Dan O visits here about once a week and sent me the below image. I am not complaining I missed out on eating it, I shall return, again, and again, and again – that Pork Belly one makes me hungry and I need to compare it to my unicorn, the Pork Belly Reuben from Josh at Danno’s Dee Why.
But THE BEEF DELUXE wins on many levels for me, it is firm, flavorsome and what I would describe as a very tidy burger, while Josh’s burgers at Danno’s are like having dirty sex, you need a nap after, you need to shower after and you are drained for the entire day, Chris’s Deluxe Burger was more like sex with a librarian it was demure and beautiful in every way but it let loose and packed a punch! I really have to stop comparing burgers to sex!!
All the ingredients in this burger were top grade, Chris is right, the beef speaks for itself and the other ingredients were there to compliment. Burgers with beetroot and egg automatically get an extra points from me. THE BEEF DELUXE is an easy 4.275/5 pickles for me and those fries are solid, paired with the rosemary, sea salt and aioli are a solid 4.5/5 spuds.
My only gripe from my visit to the venue, I asked if we could order the DOUBLE CHICKEN BURGER and the young wait dude said we could not, Dan O loves it so much he said we would be sharing a plate of the DOUBLE FRIED CHICKEN (sans burger) and the wait guy said, the double fried chicken is the exact same chicken we put on the burger, if you love it so much when you get the beef burger just remove the beef and put the chicken on it. Now not sure if he was just taking the piss, but if that was the case why could they not just make me the bloody burger? It was AOK and not over-griping, because that chicken – in my best elocution (which will piss the mother dearest off) – is fucking insane!!! KFC can burn in it’s transfatty hell!! This fried chicken is possibly the best I have ever had, our issue was the chicken with the burgers and fries left us literally force feeding the chicken down! So superb! I can see why Dan O loves the burger so much.
BELAROMA is not a burger place, it is a Coffee Centre specialising in all things coffee, it also has this awesome cafe in a nice setting with great decor, and an aroma that is all coffee. It is a wonder they also manage to have food so delicious and burgers up their to compete with the big guys of Sydney (Danno’s, Chur, Mary’s etc) – the place is worth a visit – and if you don’t like a burger, grab the chicken, if you don’t like food then grab a coffee and if you like your head to explode like a shot of adrenaline to the temple order a cold dripped coffee. In total I rate this venue 4.5/5 spoons!
